PSA - For NC Educators and Parents

This post is for all the educators and parents that would like to know more about accountability and assessment in NC schools. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has launched a comprehensive dashboard of assessment results in North Carolina. Further, this dashboard goes back many years, so trends and patterns may emerge. This post will take you to the site and provide instruction on how to begin navigating the site. Let me know if you see anything interesting based upon your school and/or district! Below is the link and description from NCDPI:

  • NCDPI Accountability Dashboard - Tableau Dashboard that provides NC EOG and EOC Reading, Math, and Science Assessments results from 16-17 through 22-23. View results by state, region, district, and/or school.

Here are some general directions to get you started.
  • Click the link in the above description. You may have to click an additional redirect link...could not make this direct, sorry.
  • Once on the site, drink in the busyness and non-user friendly design. That is perhaps, intentional. But we will endeavor to move forward.
  • Decide what you want to drill down on. For this example, let's start with district. On the left nav bar, choose District.
  • After some spinning, the next page will alphabetically land on Alamance-Burlington Schools.
  • Now, look at the top nav bar and locate the Alamance-Burlington Schools box. For this example, let's now go to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (this district has been in the news lately, so let's check up on them). For some reason, this district is located based upon the county name, Mecklenburg, so scroll down the District dropdown.
    • Now take a look to see if we are on the same page. You should see District-level results. All subjects, all tested subjects and grade levels, proficiency default is GLP (grade level proficiency) and the year default is 2025.
    • The data boxes show a wealth of data, but this is the 30,000 ft view, so let's drill down.
  • Let's choose a school next. Now go back to the left nav bar and choose a School. For this example, choose your child's school.
    • Click School on the left nav bar and a new page will load. You will now use the County dropdown (top nav bar after the page loads) and choose your county...for this example we are sticking with Mecklenburg.
    • You will see both Charter and Public schools listed. Once you click your school within the dropdown list, the dashboard data will load.
    • This page will show you the 30,000 ft view of school-level results. You can now see patterns and trends (note the 5-year trend graph beneath the Proficiency nav box).
    • Lots to see and do on this page, so peruse and enjoy
This seems a reasonable place to stop and let the data from your school come to life. Almost every item on this dashboard is clickable and will reveal additional information. For the next post, we will may dig deeper in some school-level data. Enjoy! Happy Data Mining!
